Product Reviews

Great image, great sound, amazing HDR

1 - This P1 is amazingly easy to set up. I had it out of the box and projecting on my screen in under 10 minutes (excluding a firmware update). Five minutes of that was making minor adjustments to get the image just right. Total time with the firmware update was under 30 minutes.

2 - HDR on this thing is amazing. I have even seen a display that handles HDR this good. It's the first time that I have seen that HDR WOW factor I've been hearing about. I just never really noticed it other displays. It has a dedicated HDR mode and you can certainly tell when it kicks in.

3 - The sound is INCREDIBLE. Honestly, I was not expecting this kind of sound from this thing. It's comparable to the higher end sound bars out there. I've heard other projectors that have a 10 watt speaker and they always sound terrible. If you pair this with a sub, you will get good sound quality (but obviously not the full 5.1+ experience). I was trying to decide what to do with my center since the P1 is sitting where my center was. As a temporary solution, I am using the P1 as my "center" so to speak, and using the digital output to my receiver. It works, but you have to constantly tweak it. I do wish this had speaker input jacks so it could be used as a center.

4 - Games are visually stunning, especially 4K HDR games on my Xbox One X. I have enjoyed hours of games so far and have even gone back to some older games I have already beaten just due to the visual difference from my older projector. I'm a casual console gamer so while the lag for games is perfectly fine for me, if you plan on plugging up a PC to play super fast games with a keyboard/mouse, this may not be the projector for you.

5 - I love being able to get up and stand right in front of the P1. This was not possible with standard throw projectors as the bulb is coming from behind. Even at a 100 inches. I still duck sometimes as I have for years then remember that I don't need to.

6 - The sharpness of this projector is hands down amazing. It's the best out of the box projector I've ever owned and I've hardly adjusted any of the settings. My last projector was a 3 year old Epson Home Cinema 5030UB.

7 - While I didn't buy this projector for the smart features they have turned out to be an amazing addition as I can control it via Alexa or Google Assistant on my phone.

8 - Almost no fan noise, even with the sound muted. As someone that has had to deal with a projector almost directly above me, you immediately realize that you no longer have to ignore the fan or turn the volume up to drown out the fan noise. It does kick in high gear when it first goes into HDR mode but quickly quiets down.

10 - Black levels, this has always been one weakness of DLP. Not with the P1. Black levels are extremely accurate with amazing contrast

11 - Out of the box, the colors are almost spot on. Only a few minor tweaks to the settings are needed.

12 - This thing is BRIGHT. It is so bright that I must lower the brightness in a dark room. I do turn it up during the day so I don't get any wash out from ambient light

Negatives, some may not want or use the soundbar. I feel like Optoma jumped the gun on this one. Even though you get an amazing image without the soundbar, you must wonder how much it added to the overall cost. The marketplace is terrible, all apps but YouTube are limited to 480p (that is no typo). They are slow/sluggish and I'm unsure why they don't just run Android and not have their own marketplace. Just use Google's Play Store. This may have to do with licensing and other factors though. Maybe the marketplace will mature over time but for now, you will need another source for 4K. I don’t have an ALR screen yet, so the light bounces of my Stewart Firehawk up to the ceiling but this is true for every UST projector so you will more then likely want to get an ALR screen that is for UST.

If you are looking for a great HDR image, especially with games and movies, then you won't regret buying the P1. If you want good sound as well, then this is definitely the projector for you when compared to every other 4K HDR UST currently out there in this price range besides the LG, which is quite a bit more.

Great sharp image
We really love our P1. We run an OTA tuner, a Mac Mini, Blu ray and play videos from a USB hard drive using the P1's built in media player. ProjectorScreen.com's customer service is great too. They shipped out these new P1's to their customers the day they received them from Optoma. The Optoma P1 and Projectorscreen.com. Two thumbs up!

Excellent Projector !!!
As I mentioned in my earlier review, I bought this projector a couple of days ago and I was eagerly waiting for the projector to come. The wait was over last evening, I got the projector delivered. It cane in a very sturdy and secure packing. I can't wait to switch it ON. So, I decided to project on my guest bedroom wall. It took a few secs to start and the few mins to update. I installed the Connect App. The installation was very straight forward and self explonatory. Then I started streaming a couple of videos, to my surprise, it was AMAZING. Then, I decided to immediately set it up in my movie theater in the basement. We watched a couple of 4K videos, it was a mindblowing experience. The sound quality was good (I felt it good because I have a more powerful 7.2 channel speaker setup). Overall, the picture quality, build quality, the OS interface, etc. is really AWESOME.

Quiet, Bright, Easy to Use

The projector arrived in perfect condition, and I was very happy with the additional packaging. Setup was easy and it doesn’t take much to get started. I would say the projector start up time is 10/20 seconds.

Right out of the box, the projector looks great and the Apple TV Menu I could read crisp and clear and the high res pictures they show when you highlight a movie look absolutely amazing.

However, when I turned on Interstellar in 4K, I was a bit disappointed by the picture. On then scenes where lighting wasn’t overly bright or dark, faces and other things in shadows were overly darkened. After messing with the settings for a few days, I finally have the projector in a spot where I really like it. Just be aware that out of the box the settings may be a bit jarring in terms of picture quality.

At first I came from a 65 inch QLED samsung, and the picture difference was stark. I was accustomed to near perfect blacks and vibrant color and I was being critical. However, after seeing this thing with updated settings vs a bulb based, regular throw projector, the P1 knocks it out of the park. I don’t regret my purchase at all, and I’m beyond excited to start watching movies again at home.

I’m projecting onto a 120” ALR Screen.
